How to find the motivation you need to get stuff done
We’ve all been there. Your to do list is a mile long but your motivation and ambition to get it done are running on E. You’re normally not a procrastinator but you just can’t bring yourself to silence that voice in the back of your head that’s telling you, “You don’t have to do that right now, it can wait. Just take a nap again today.”
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with taking a break, getting some rest, and listening to your body but unfortunately sometimes our mind can be our own worst enemy and cause us more harm than good. If you, like many others, have found yourself in this position before you’re not alone. I’ve found there are a few things that will not only get you out of that funk but get you highly motivated and inspired to tackle that looming to do list and then some. You may even, gasp, accomplish things that weren’t even on your list because you feel so inspired.
Change your space, change your environment.Maybe you work from home. Or maybe the motivation you lack is what’s keeping you from getting in that much needed workout. Sometimes we become a product of our environment and that environment can be wherever feels most comfortable. If you work from home find a local coffee shop you can head to for an hour. Take a book and bring your computer and know that whether you just read or pull out your computer you’re likely to get more done than you are just sitting in the same place that got you to the position you’re in. If it’s a workout at home you keep telling yourself to get done, try joining a gym with classes so that you can commit to a time and hold yourself accountable while still getting out of your comfort zone.
Put down your phone.I get it. We are all guilty of scrolling through Pinterest and Instagram seeking inspiration or the motivation we think we are going to find on the other end of the screen. The problem with that is is that it keeps our focus on what’s in front of us and prevents us from taking any action. If you’re feeling stuck put down your phone and take a walk outside. You can also try one of these 6 apps to keep you from resorting to your phone too often during your work day.
Do some mindset work.If you haven’t heard of mindset work, then listen up!
“According to work by pioneering Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck and others, the best predictor of success in life is none of these usual suspects--it's your mindset. Those who achieve great things generally believe they can improve and grow as people. This is called a "growth mindset." Those who are frustrated in their attempts to realize their dreams tend to believe their abilities and talents are static, a.k.a. they have a "fixed mindset."(Read more about the science behind this insight here.)
- In addition to this aspect of the theory, it is often times believed that something like lack of motivation, ambition, or just a general hesitance to do something can be caused by deeper underlying issue that can only be brought to the surface by working on your mindset. To get past some of these mindset issues or mind blocks, sit down and start writing. Think about what it is you really want to accomplish and why you think you’re not doing it. Maybe the thing you have to do has a potential of confrontation or rejection. Or maybe it’s something that is correlated to something that has a bad association from the past. Whatever it is, try doing some mindset work and see if this helps you overcome your issue.
Get up and take action, even if it’s a small step. The only way to accomplish something is to start right? Sometimes one small step and action can lead to much more. Maybe go fold that load of laundry that’s been sitting in the basket for awhile or respond to that email that’s been sitting in your inbox. The domino effect from something that may seem small can be much more bigger and rewarding.
Reward yourself!Speaking of rewards, don’t forget to reward yourself every now and then! Getting work done and being productive is great but if you don’t see any benefit at the end sometimes it can make it even harder to get the work done. There’s real science behind reward centers of our brains and the source of motivation. Rewarding yourself once you finish the job will likely encourage you to START the job next time.
